The Nürburgring is the toughest, most dangerous and most demanding purpose-built race track in the world. Jackie Steward used to call it "the Green Hell" and admits he never drove at 100% in there!!
That's a rare one, with no commentary at all (natural sounds only)...
Did you enjoy this year's Monaco? You certainly did!! Well, here's another famous soaky Monaco Grand Prix, when Ayrton Senna well and truly appeared on F1’s radar!!
After a delay of 45 minutes, the race started with Alain Prost taking an early lead from Niki Lauda. The McLaren pair were soon hounded by Senna’s Toleman and the Brazilian passed Lauda with ease as he reeled Prost in. But with 31 laps completed, and to Senna’s outrage, the race was red-flagged after Jacky Ickx had seen Prost waving his hands and duly decided to stop the race - controversially, without consulting the other stewards before the decision. Even now, the question of who would have won the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix still rumbles around the paddock...
An epic duel from the bitterly fought internecine war of the Williams drivers in 1987. Nigel Mansell was the only one of the two to stop for fresh tyres during that year’s Silverstone race. But having fallen well over 20 seconds behind Nelson Piquet, Mansell savaged the lap record time and again to close on his Brazilian nemesis. Then, in a move of pure bravado, he duped Piquet into defending the outside of the super-fast Stowe corner, and dived for the inside. Piquet all-but turned in on him, but Mansell was through. He won the race, and ran out of fuel on the slowing-down lap!! The crowd mobbed him!

Prost vs Senna - the ultimate battle!! The race that decided the 1989 Drivers' Championship in Prost's favour, after the infamous collision at the final chicane between him and Senna and the controversial disqualification of the Brazilian... A classic one!

Nigel Mansell (Williams-Renault) dominates the whole weekend, takes pole & leads the race for more than 60 laps. Then out of nowhere ducks into the pits (suspecting a deflating tyre) and comes out behind Ayrton Senna (McLaren-Honda), starting one of the greatest battles in Monaco history!

One of the best opening laps ever!! Ayrton Senna ran 5th off the start, but was leading by the end of the first lap! In mixed (wet-dry ) conditions he made 4 pit-stops compared to Alain Prost's 7 (!) and he finally outlapped the whole grid but Damon Hill who finished 2nd!!
"He made us all look stupid", Prost admitted, though Senna said it was "easy" because of traction-control... Sublime!

The final race of the season and Michael Schumacher (Benetton-Ford) clinches his first driver's championship in a highly controversial way, after a dramatic crash with Damon Hill (Williams-Renault) on lap 36. Race won by Nigel Mansell, the 31st and final grand prix victory of his career.

Michael Schumacher, starting from 16th, won the race after a brilliant performance! However, this was a controversial victory as Schumi, when on slicks in the wet, kept blocking Damon Hill who was on wets and was travelling much faster than the German. The stewards agreed that Schumacher was driving too aggressively in order to stop Hill from passing him so he was given a one-race ban, suspended for four Grands Prix.

This is Michael Schumacher's first win for Ferrari and one of his best races! In the rain-soaked Spanish Grand Prix he dominated completely, winning the race by 45 secs (although he slowed down towards the end) and setting a fastest lap which was 2.2 secs faster than anyone else. In the words of Martin Brundle, “Michael didn’t have the best car by a mile, but he won it by a mile.”

Another controversial moment in Michael Schumacher's career.. It's the last race of the season and Schumi needs to finish ahead of Jacques Villeneuve (or both to retire!) in order to clinch the title. On lap 48 the Canadian makes his move but Schumacher turns in on him and ends up in the gravel and out of the race. He hopes Villeneuve will retire too; instead, he goes ahead to finish 3rd and win the title! Mika Hakkinen won the race - his first ever victory.

One of Schumacher's greatest ever wins - the race where Ross Brawn famously told his star driver that all he had to do to win was build a 25 second lead in just 19 laps before his final pit stop. As difficult a task as you are likely to get in F1, made harder by the fact that your rivals (McLaren-Mercedes) have the fastest car! But a nifty switch of strategy and a relentless sequence of qualifying-style laps from the German were enough to take the most unlikely of victories! Superb!!

An extraordinary race run in extremely wet weather! It featured a HUGE crash on the first lap involving at least 13 cars as well as a controversial collision between race leader Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard, who was being lapped at the time. This was the first ever Grand Prix victory for the Jordan team thanks to Damon Hill, who took the last win in his career!

The only race in F1 history that ended behind the safety car! Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Jordan-Mugen-Honda) suffered a brake problem and crashed heavily 4 laps before the end, so the race ended under a yellow flag, which prohibited overtaking. Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve, Damon Hill and Ricardo Zonta all crashed onto the "Wall of Champions", in turn 15!

For sure the worst moment in Michael Schumacher's career. At the start he made a poor beginning and both Coulthard and Irvine got ahead. As he tried to repass Irvine at Stowe Corner Michael went off, due to a sudden brake problem, and hit the wall very hard head-on.
Schumi broke his leg and missed the next 6 races - another lost driver's championship for Scuderia...

With M. Schumacher unable to challenge him for the title, this was supposed to be an "easy" race for Mika Hakkinen. His McLaren-Mercedes MP4-14 was well-suited to the long straights of the circuit, so he duly claimed pole position and led the race comfortably. However, on lap 30 Mika made an elementary mistake: he snapped at the first chicane, spinning off and stalling. In a rare show of emotion from the Finn, he burst into tears at the side of the road...

Rubens Barrichello, starting from 18th, took his first sensational Grand Prix victory which was the first F1 win for a Brazilian driver since Ayrton Senna at the 1993 Australian Grand Prix. Safety cars, a spectator running across the track and the fact that some parts of the circuit were wet while others were completely dry made this race marvelously entertaining!

Michael Schumacher has admitted that Mika Hakkinen was the best driver he'd raced against, and here's why! A brilliant, audacious, race-winning move from Mika who passed Schumi while were both lapping Zonta's BAR! One of the best overtaking manoeuvres ever!!

Schumi vs Mika, the ultimate battle!! After an amazing race in treacherous conditions the German clinches his 3rd title, the first for Ferrari since 1979. It's the beginning of the Schumacher-Ferrari golden era!

The moment a protesting Irish priest, Neil Horan, took to the circuit it was clear that this wasn’t going to be a normal Grand Prix. Safety car was deployed and the vast majority of cars decided to pit under it, causing many frontrunners to drop places! What followed was the most exciting race of the year, full of wheel-to-wheel battles and overtaking manoeuvres! The lead changed hands six times and the highlight of the day was for sure the battle between Raikkonen and Barrichello!

Fernando Alonso's first win! The Spaniard became the youngest driver ever to win an F1 Grand Prix (at the age of 22 years and 26 days) and his lapping M. Schumacher was definitely the highlight of the race!

Schumi vs Kimi - the battle for the title! The German, having qualified 14th, clinches his 6th World Championship by finishing 8th, despite a collision with Takuma Sato's BAR during the race resulting in a broken front wing.

Another Schumi-Brawn masterpiece!! James Allen called Schumacher “a winning machine” here, and why not?
Renault looked blisteringly quick on Saturday, and Alonso had a good chance of winning, especially after leading the first half of the race. Ferrari decided to switch Schumacher from his originally planned three stops to an extraordinary four to try and jump the Spaniard. Schumacher’s unrivalled ability to suddenly up the pace when it matters paid dividends again as he put in a stunning sequence of fast laps in the final two stints of the race to get one over on his future rival!

The best race of 2005! Kimi Raikkonen starts from 17th and takes an astonishing victory after overtaking Fisichella impressively on the last lap!! Equally impressive was Fernando Alonso who charged through the field and gave everyone a thrill as he passed Schumacher, the seven-time World Champion, around the outside in the daunting 130R Corner!

Penalties, black flags, 4 safety cars, Lewis Hamilton - the best rookie ever - taking his first victory in his 6th race and, of course, Robert Kubica's huge shunt which shocked us all. What a race!!!

I've just come across this site after googling for a few of my old favourites. If you can make part 11 of the Donnington 93 race work you'll become my all item hero! In the meanwhile I'll tuck into some of these other classics (particularly looking forward to the '84 race, I was only 2 when that was screened and thus dont have a great memory of it!!!!!!)
